I want to be able to grow my own vanilla beans at home because I know how expensive they are. I don't have much experience in growing plants, but I have grown things before. I know how sensitive to climate the plant is but I don't have a green house.Any tips? I live in the valley in California.|||In a nutshell:
Unless you are an experienced orchid grower with a greenhouse with lots of room, no. They really are a tropical orchid and a large vining one at that. You can get cuttings for the plant cheaply on ebay, but it's just not worth the the time and effort. Get your beans from Penzeys Spices and not from the grocer or some specialty shop, you'll get better and cheaper beans from them.|||Here's how to grow them: http://search.yahoo.com/search;_ylt=A0ge鈥?/a>

Has the California state budget been revised to allow more money for teachers' salaries and to hault budget cuts for the education system? Surely education of children is more important than bailing our homeowners who were too "uneducated" to read their mortgages?|||I hope not. It is time to stop the greedy leftist teachers and their union. They are failing our students anyway. Give the teachers an F and expel them from school.|||I live in SC. No, the budget has not been revised as of yet. There are tremendous cuts in teacher's pay as well as the quality of education for our children. The class size reduction act is currently suspended in many districts which means there will be larger classes with less help for the teachers. Surely education IS more important, but unfortunately, any time there is a budget crisis what happens is that they take the money from those who cannot speak for themselves in protest - the children! It is up to the parents to protest this and make a change. I've written my elected officials - have you?????|||Thank the greedy Liberal infested teachers unions for spending money everywhere EXCEPT where it needs to be spent. They are useless to the teachers. All they care about is getting more money year after year, and California will give it to them.
California is also drowning in illegal immigrant benefit costs, along with the resultant school over crowding....higher taxes to help cover that are on the way.
California is nothing more than a comedy of errors on the government side.
We need a real Republican government to get things back to some kind of fiscal normalcy here.
Diversity only gets us exactly what we have now.|||California's problems related to educating droves of anchor babies begot by illegal aliens, droves so large that the state needs to build one school a day, illegal aliens who are not paying the taxes which support the educational system is probably the very last thing on my list of concerns.

What are the degree requirements to teach in California? Do you have to get your Masters within a few years like NY or can you get by on a Bachelor's Degree?|||To teach in Elementary School (multiple subject, self-contained classrooms) you must have at least a BA/BS in any subject, with a credential. To teach a single subject (High School, etc.) you need a BA or BS in that subject and a credential. It would be best if you contact the State of California through http://www.ctc.ca.gov/default.html . That is the State Credentialing Office. They have all the answers. You do not need a Masters to teach in California in K-12 education, and you usually only get $1000 extra per year for it. Good Luck.

My partner plead guilty to a misdemeanor marijuana paraphernalia possession charge in North Dakota recently. Being a California resident, he returned home after the trial. Now, here in California, he has a legal medical cannabis recommendation, but the judge chose to ignore that fact and sentenced him to a drug test as well as a fine.

He's supposed to take this drug test by December 15th, but we haven't gotten any official communication from them and we have no idea how or where it's supposed to happen.

My question is this. How exactly is this going to be enforced? Is North Dakota going to send someone out here? Are they going to force him to go back there just for one single pee test after a first misdemeanor conviction with a previously clean record?

There were no actual drugs found. It wasn't even proven that the pipe contained cannabis residue. They denied him a lawyer and he plead guilty in panic just wanting to get home. (We're working on contacting the ND Public Defender's office about that part; please just answer the question about the drug test.)

Thank you in advance for your time. Personal experiences in this regard (that is, other people who have been convicted for a drug-related misdemeanor in a state other than their own) would be deeply appreciated.|||1) "Medical marijuana" in California means nothing in North Dakota. You have to obey the laws of the state you're in, not the ones of the state you're from.
    2) "Medical marijuana" does NOT legalize marijuana even in California. Marijuana is illegal everywhere in the US.
    3) A misdemeanor warrant in one state will not likely result in an extradition to another state. However, an arrest will be waiting for him when he returns.|||ND doesn't care about CA. Apples and potatoes.|||CONTACT A LAWYER.

You tell a disjointed story, no details.

Par 1. Pleaded guilty, sentenced to drug test and fine. Left SD. (California medical cannabis recommendation irrelevant)

Par. 2. SD Court Order == Test by 15 Dec 08. Does SD know present address? Did SD court order test at a particular address?

Par 3. My idea == If no test by 15 Dec 2008, a warrant will be issued in SD for your partner. Return to SD, partner could be arrested.

If warrant sent to CA, partner could be arrested and returned to SD. If bond is high enough, bond agents could retrieve partner, but not likely.

Get A Lawyer in CA. A lawyer can get all this cleared up with a few properly addressed and worded letters.

After the guilty plea, the details are unimportant. Your partner has to follow the SD court instructions.

Is it because California has a lot of blacks and Mexicans?|||Sadly, keeping people in chains is a business.... It's an economic issue; just like slavery then, slavery now....|||Earlier this year, three federal judges ruled that prison overcrowding prevents inmates from getting adequate medical and mental health care. They ordered California to reduce its prison population by 44,000 inmates.Over the summer, the Schwarzenegger administration submitted a plan that would reduce the number of prison inmates by half that number.

The judges said the plan was inadequate and vague. They tossed it out, and ordered the state to submit a new plan that will meet their goal of 44,000 fewer inmates. The judges also want a specific time line for meeting that goal.

The Schwarzenegger Administration has said it will comply, but it鈥檚 refused to disclose details of its new prison population reduction plan in advance.

The federal judges have warned that if the new plan isn鈥檛 good enough, they鈥檒l devise one of their own 鈥?and force California to put it to work

    3. California attracts a criminal element.
    4. California breeds a criminal element.

There's four good reasons right there.|||It is a combination of things. Primarily, it is due to having such high taxes and squandering the proceeds. That leaves nothing left to build more prison space. Add in the fact that the State Constitution limits prison crowding. And what do you get?

More criminals + more convictions + no additional prison space + Constitutional requirement = early release.

*|||Thie release of the 46,000 prisoners hasn't happened yet. CA has two years before that happens. Yes, they do have a large number of illegals and they do have a three strikes law in force. Keep in miss 3 other stars than California isn't the only state with a proposition to legalize marijuana!|||heres how it works...

now this is a BASIC representation of what is expected to happen...

    1. prop 19 passes in CALIFORNIA
    2. AMERICANS begin to cultivate AMERICAN marijuana in AMERICA, legally.
    3. Mexicans who are still trying to smuggle marijuana still want top dollar... while,
    4. AMERICAN legal marijuana is legally grown and sold throughout CA.

it is expected that the price of an OZ of good high quality indoor/outdoor will be roughly $40-$50 within California.

now i'm no genius but i cant imagine paying 400 an OZ anywhere else if thats the case in california... it just doesn't add up... so that being said...

What factors led to the further destruction of California Indians during the Gold Rush and early statehood?

I would really like to move to California, but I am having second thoughts because of the cost of living. Is it really as bad as everyone says?|||Cost of living is high because California has a lot - San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Mammoth Mountain... mild weather... and tons of things to do. A lot of people want to be in California. higher demand = higher price.|||Cali is nothing compared to cost of living in Tokyo and Paris. Supply and demand is why its so expensive. Gas is extremely low in supply in Cali so they charge a lot, everyone wants to live on the beach so they charge even more, and not to mention the millions and millions of people who go out to LA just hoping to be famous.|||Yes, it really is expensive to live here. There are three main reasons.:

    1. We have a tax and spend legislature that is constantly spending on stupid programs and ideas solely designed to keep themselves in office.

    2. We have the ballot intuitive process in which ignorant voters keep approving every "pie in the sky" bill placed on the ballot without regard to the total costs involved. (like that stupid "Bullit Train").

    3. Supply and demand. "Everyone wants to live here (for some reason) which makes every thing more expensive. It really is NOT like you see portrayed on silly television programs.|||It's expensive because everybody wants to move here. The weather is beautiful and you can snowboard, golf, drive quads in the desert, and go on the beach in one day!

The only reason why people even say California is bad because their $300,000 2,500 sq. ft. homes in the nicest of neighborhoods can barely pay for a REALLY SMALL empty land in CA.|||because $hitloads of people live there and they were hoping by raising the price-- they'd push 'em out-- but their plan(s) have proven futile / created nothing but poverty.

The rent for apartments has not come down at all since the whole recession has started. Gas is high, food is high, a lot of traffic and they drive way to fast. I live in California and plan to move away again. There is no reason for the high cost. The electric on my small one bedroom senior living apartment is $100 a month. And I live alone, well not really I do have a cat. Even bus tickets are un real. Movies cost 12 dollars for one person if its a first run or 8 for a second run or bad theatre. Even fresh fruit and vegtables that are grown here are high priced. The price for housing hasn't gone down either. You can rent a room in a semi good area for about 600 a month.

You can't drink the water here so you buy bottled water. The air is so polluted you can see the brown color in the air.

Yes there are beautiful places to see but it hurts your heart to see the damage done by the pollution.|||It sucks stay away. I wish I had left long ago. If you are the person with a "garage band" and making the noise, being a good neighbor would indicate that you stop the noise at 10 PM or before. Check with your local police department.

Same thing with weed blowers/ hedge trimmers: not too early in the morning (before 9 AM) or later than 10 PM.|||Call your local police station and ask them.

Noise ordinances don't usually specify types of noise. Any sound over a certain loudness after or before certain times is a violation.

Okay so I would greatly appreciate if you could help me. I am planning on moving to L.A California with my friend. It would help a lot to know the living expenses are, the utilities, medical dental and car insurance and everything else. And if it even possible that we'll make it I'm gonna try anyways just would like to know. I'm going into acting and/or business I'm already a CNA. But could you please tell me some acting schools also thanks.|||it depend on you that how much money do you spend but still i recommend that you should concern with the real estate agents they guide you one of the agent i usually concern is johnbeck who have lots of updated knowledge regarding this and hopefully he will resolve your problem.|||Almost everyone that hopes to act comes to LA and it is VERY expensive to live there. I know an acquaintence that rented an above garage "apartment" for $1,000 a month. He bathed in a half bath. But it was a big space and he accepted the conditions.|||I live in the Santa Clara County which is in the bay area just south of San Francisco. The cost of living is crazy here and similar in certain parts of LA. I pay $1000 rent for a one bedroom/one bath apartment. If you do some research you will notice most jobs out here pay more than many other parts of the country, but its all relative to the cost of living. I make close to a six figure salary but am considered middle income around here. Try looking at local LA classifieds. Hope this helps.

California had the most to lose in a housing bust. Why not set fires in various areasa when the winds are up and save the banks? Hmmmmmmmmm.|||The insurance companies are probably crying right now, and im sure noone wants to lose their homes in a fire. there are easier ways to save money besides starting national disasters..|||lolol|||The money has to come from somewhere whether it is from a bank or an insurance company. The fire will be an extra charge on everyone's insurance bill. With a fire everyone loses.|||You don't see these people who have lost everything from baby pictures to wedding bands?
    The fires will help the building industry but I'd rather be broke than fried.|||I am sorry but this is a ridiculous question;

yes they are going to burn down houses, leave people homeless, and even kill a few people (as there have been deaths) just for the insurance money|||California has been having fires as long as I can remember. They were having fires when the news media was proclaiming we were heading to a second ice age.

I seriously doubt that a business (or more than one) is behind this.

In spring, it'll be mudslides.|||There's a $250,000 reward for the arson-related Santiago Fire. The authorities are looking for someone with a white F-150 truck that was seen in the area. If they find the arsonist -- and I pray we will -- we'll let you know.

There's a lot of theories out there, why not add this one to the mix. Some 1,700 homes lost, last I looked, and all fires are NOT contained so the toll could grow. Deaths were involved. That's a murder charge if they resulted from an arson-related fire. People lost irreplaceable items, like photographs and computer hard drives and grandma's quilt. Insurance can't reimburse you for the pain and suffering.

Have you donated money, time or materials to the thousands displaced? Insurance doesn't cover it all, and if you've ever dealt with FEMA, you know that's an imperfect process, to put it nicely.|||With all the voices in your head, you would think one of them would tell you to shut up.|||well...it'll help other currencies catch up and pass the US dollar....|||no no i dont think so at all. c'mon that's not a good and valid conspiracy theory

I have a small IT business in California and I need to hire independent contractors from time to time. Recently, one of the people I hired for a job went to my customer and told them he would do the same work I do for them, except he would do it cheaper. I've heard that non-compete agreements are illegal in California, so how am I supposed to protect my business?|||Charge less then the independent contractors.|||Quality work at competitive prices. Good old faction competition is good for your customers, so you must compete for their business.
good luck|||As you are working with customers, it's good to educate them as to why you are the absolute best choice for them. When I'm hiring, I don't go for the cheapest thing, because cheapest definitely always isn't the best. I go for the job well done FIRST, then look at competive pricings. I'd shy away from independant contractors for a number of reasons: if they don't pay their taxes, I could be held responsible for it. (Check on that, I'm not 100% sure it's right.) I'm not into taking chances with my money.

If there's an organization you can join that gives good reputation to your name - join it and put their logo on everything you do - invoices, etc. YOU are trustworthy. YOU do great work. YOU are in good standing legally. Any customer who's willing to go with someone who's a thief (like the contractor trying to steal your customer) isn't too smart, in my opinion. But sometimes people need to hear the obvious. If you've got any kind of newsletters - or even, again, if there's room for a good one-liner on your invoices - TELL them why they're SO smart for choosing you! Back that up with good sound work practices and then don't worry about the rest. Stuff is always out there, but like I said, a smart customer wouldn't go with a thief anyway - he wouldn't trust him.

If you haven't done much marketing, do small things to keep clients, like offer special discounts to really good customers thanking them, etc. But you're probably already doing that.

Best of wishes to you. cm

  • I have recently graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in International studies with a focus on cultural studies and am interested in moving to california. I've always lived on the east coast, specifically a suburb of Washington D.C. and I'm well aware that I could find a lot of work here in D.C, but I would really like to move out of the area in order to experience a new area and I've always liked California, but the only issue is cost. My aunt lives in Hermosa Beach and I've heard that even there it's over priced, so I'd like to find a place that is not quite extremely expensive, yet I could still find a lot of work in my field of study. It would be great if some CA residence could help on my endeaver. Thanks!|||Honestly, the best places for you to find work in your field is in the San Francisco Bay area or the Los Angeles area.

Unless you want to live in a not-so-nice section of these areas, or someplace far away from work, you will have to pay quite a bit for rent.

I was reading the ballot earlier and it looks like the main reason for legalizing weed was so California, who is a debt can collect tax revenue, but I was wondering if all the smokers now have weed growing in their back yards for free, what tax revenue is there going to be? Not to mention if they outright legalize weed then Prop 215 was an absolute lie. Can't wait for the little kids hanging out in front of 7-11 asking me to buy them a pack of joints. Sounds great.|||Good question. It is true that some people would grow it at home, just like some people grow their own tomatoes. There's nothing stopping people from growing their own tobacco, yet the cigarette companies still seem to do well. People can cook at home, too - yet the restaurant industry has thrived for decades.

The fact is that the vast majority of people will not have the time/knowledge/inclination to grow their own, and will buy it pre-packaged.

I don鈥檛 smoke, but I definitely think it should be legal, provided that it is regulated like alcohol (no minors, and no driving).

It makes absolutely no sense that cannabis is illegal while alcohol and tobacco (both of which are MORE harmful and MORE addictive) are legal.

    Legalization would:

    - Create thousands of (legal, income-tax paying) jobs
    - Devastate drug cartels, which would suddenly be without 75% of their income
    - Provide an enormous windfall for the government, which would bring in billions in taxes and SAVE billions more on law enforcement (ending Prohibition played a big part in getting the U.S. out of the Great Depression)
    - Allow police, courts and prisons to focus their resources on DANGEROUS criminals, rather than harmless potheads

The more taxes the pot smokers have to pay, the less the rest of us will have to pay - everybody wins!|||Well you can make your own alcohol too... but how many people actually take the time to do that??

Besides, many people don't know how to do it themselves or are too lazy. Plus, to get a good amount of weed that you can pick and smoke takes kind of a lot of time. You have to wait months ones you pick it for it to bud again. Just like any plant really... I mean sure you can grow your own orange and lemon tree, but who really does that?? No one|||Umm...California will not legalize marijuana. So stop wasting your effort. Most potheads tend to not drink, so the alcohol companies will not push for it. The (AMA) American Medical Association does not recommend marijuana over the synthetic medications, which can actually be better for you than smoking marijuana!!! And the conservatives will not give you the time of day!|||The Federal Govt will step in before any such thing happens. The State is whacked out of their heads.|||Right, as if most people are actually going to grow their own. How many people make their own clothes? How many people grow their own food? How many legal citizens work under the table unless they are hiding from child support? How many people lie on their taxes? How many people make their own alcohol?

Are there people who do those things? Sure, there are. But even though those things are all super simple to do, few people actually do it. Marijuana is the same way. Obviously there are people growing it right now for free. But most of the people using it arent - they are buying it from someone else. And most people, will go buy it from a store where it is taxed if it were legal because its convenient. Every other product on the market proves that. There isnt a single thing available in the stores that people cant make themselves, or go to someone else who can make it themselves and sell it without taxes and/or illegally. But walmart is still pulling in those profits, including the sales tax on every thing that goes directly to the state.

I disagree that out right legalizing marijuana makes prop 215 a lie. Marijuana can be and IS used for medical purposes. Legalizing it for everyone is no different than any of these pharmaceutical companies releasing rx meds to be over the counter after their patent has expired. Check zyrtec out. It used to be one of the most expensive prescription allergy meds available by rx only, and without a generic... 6 months after the patent ran out, they bring it out over the counter at a fraction of the price.

I live in California and grow fruits/vegetables, herbs, and medicinal plants. I would like to grow everything on a larger scale and start selling at the farmers market. But I need to become a certified farmer to do that, so what kind of criteria must be met, and how would I start the process?|||You become a certified farmer by having the county agricultural commissioner come and inspect your land and see that you are, in fact, growing the crops that you claim yourself. Then you will receive a certificate with these crops, expected yields and seasons. This allows you to participate in certified farmer's markets with only the crops listed.

    organic certification is different.

So, bottom-line: CALL YOUR COUNTY AGRICULTURAL COMMISSIONER and set up an appointment to have your ground inspected.|||If you are looking to be certified organic then there is a process the USDA puts forward...

    http://www.ers.usda.gov/Briefing/Organic鈥?/a>

If you are looking to join an organized farmers market, then you need to contact the group in charge to see what you need to do to apply to be a vendor. Some of them have you declare your varieties and methods and get on a waiting list to be able to sell at their market.|||LOL, "medicinal plants", yea right.|||you can not.

It takes a two/third vote of the California Legislature to pass a budget. Every year the minority party blocks passing the budget for political reasons. Many Californians suffer. California is one of only 4 or 5 states in the U.S. that requires a two/thirds vote. How do we change this? |||You are absolutely correct. The 2/3 requirement to pass a state budget is one of the many ways the state has made it so difficult to pass a budget or to balance the budget. Another major problem is Proposition 13--a whole other story. It would take an amendment to the constitution, through an initiative approved by the voters, to change the 2/3 vote requirement.|||the law is the law. these dolts know that when they take office and if party bickering keeps the budget from getting passed then it is time to withdraw them from getting paid and maybe it is time to do away with a full time body of legislators. to me it is like kids playing ball and the kid that brought the ball decides that the others made him mad so he takes the ball and goes home. one other aspect of this is that each party wants you to stay upset with the other party so that you will always vote the party and not the best person for the job. mr doodles|||California suffers because it wants to be the "sanctuary state" and spends billions it doesn't have on criminal invaders! Also, would like to know which California court form do I need to file to have a misdemeanor conviction dismissed? Thank you!|||Just in case anybody wants to argue with you: A felony which is punishable as either a felony or a misdemeanor can be reduced to a misdemeanor at ANY time, so long as a state prison sentence was not imposed (even if suspended). You should find all the forms you need, as well as further information about dismissals, here:

    http://www.courts.ca.gov/1070.htm

ADD: Since a DUI is not usually a felony, and the question makes no reference to DUI, I have no idea why Miley is discussing a DUI.|||Call an attorney who specializes in DUI cases in your state. Even if you don't hire the attorney, ask him if it's possible to get your specific charge dropped to a misdemeanor. Try to get a clue from him how he would approach that effort in the jurisdiction of your charge.

Sit down with the prosecutor in your case and ask if it can be reduced to a misdemeanor count. Many times you will find a sympathetic prosecutor who will listen to what you have to say and reduce the charge instantly without having to do anything else. You simply then appear in court and listen to the prosecutor tell the judge that he would like to reduce the charge.

Inspect your ticket for errors. Make sure the dates and addresses are all listed correctly on your DUI ticket. If you can find an error in the charge, many times a prosecutor will reduce the ticket down to a misdemeanor if you just continue on with the case.

Apply for and start attending a DUI assistance course. Start attending it before you even go to court. Take documentation of your effort to improve yourself to the prosecutor and tell him that you want to change on your own. They may be sympathetic and drop the charge to a misdemeanor count.

Tell the judge on the day of court that you would like to have the felony count dropped to a misdemeanor in exchange for a larger misdemeanor sentence. Tell him you would like to avoid having a felony on your record. The judge might just go along with your request.|||It doesn't really work the way you think it does...You can have a felony dropped to a misdemeanor and then have it dismissed by filing the paper right after.|||i would just go to your police station or court house and ask the desk clerk about it that way you don't get the wrong answer here and spend allot of time filling out the wrong paper work cuz that would really suck

  • I have a 12 month lease and my landlord wants to sell the house at the end of the lease. So he is doing all the remodeling, painting, and showing of the house while we are still living in it. It is noisy and very inconvienient and he is offering very little compensation. What kind of rights to I have under California law for a lease agreement and what kind of compensation do you think is reasonable?|||In the absence of an agreement with the tenant, the landlord's rights to enter the unit are very limited. They're all spelled out in California Civil Code 1954. Per the code, the landlord may enter the home (1) in an emergency, (2) to make *necessary* repairs, decorations, alterations & improvements, (3) to show the home to prospective buyers & tenants, provided occupying tenant is given proper advance notice, (4) when the tenant abandons the property.

I hardly think general remodeling & painting is a *necessary* improvement.

You pay the rent, you have a lease. That means you are entitled to *exclusive* possession of the property, with the exceptions noted above. Now, it's probably not a big deal if the landlord can complete all of this remodeling in one afternoon. But, I would affirmatively balk at any project that is going to extend for several days. You do not have any right to compensation if you agree to this remodeling. But, you do have a right to compensation, and in some cases the right to rescind the lease & sue for breach of lease damages against the landlord, if the landlord proceeds with this remodeling and occupies the home without your approval.|||CA law does not provide for compensation unless you are required to move out of the unit during the remodeling. Compensation is pro-rated rent for the number of days you could not inhabit the unit.

Other then that the only laws effecting this as your local construction laws regarding hours, most only allow work from 7 am to 7 pm. but your city may vary slightly.|||He does not have to compensate you for the noise. He is entitled to show the house any time. If you don't like the circumstances you should move and you should get your security back. You can make this a constructive eviction. Your compensation is that you can leave without getting charged for breaking the lease.

I'm planning to runaway to california from bergen county, new jersey. anyone have any advice? other than not to do it.|||definitely go west|||Depends on how old you are.
I live in California and I want to runaway :/
It's a good idea to leave whatever state you're at though,
because it's harder to get caught.
If you're 16 or older, it's easier to get a job than it is as someone 15 and younger. However, you'd need a work permit signed by the school district you attend, and that might be difficult to get. So my best advice is, wait a few more months. Get a job during this time where you reside, save your money; and runaway. It might be easier to do this with a friend. I'm going to talk to my friend who's a senior this upcoming year, I'm a junior, and he and I might runaway to Paris together. Or somewhere in Europe. It's easy to stay hidden/"on-the-low" and we could attend school there. We have money saved, but before we runaway, I'm going to get a job and save some more money.
I wish there was a way to talk to you about this, because it's something I really want/need to talk about, but it's difficult bringing it up with people I know (or he knows) because they could rat us out and get us both in more trouble. If you need more advice, just ask me (:

  • Many states will lose seats because congress is limited to 435 congressional seats. Because California has so many illegals now, they will have about 25% of all the congressmen. California will dominate Washington politics because of this.

What say you?|||Congress is made up of the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Each state has 2 Senators, the House is limited to 435. The original idea was to have no more than 30,000 Representatives but even if we expanded this to 50 or 60,000 there would be 5,000 members.

I for one would be willing to give your state 1 representative for every 30,000 illegal immigrants that you take out of our state. I would give you Nancy Pelosi and both of our Senators (Feinstein and Boxer) as a show of good will. Hell I'll let you take those 3 and we can keep the illegals because without them here the illegals don't stand a chance of getting all the freebies that is crippling our state budget.|||They are counted because the 13 colonies wanted as much representation as they could get. Many people have said the liberals nest in California and yet they opposed the union of gays . How can this be right ? Is California as liberal as people say or just another State that understands whats best for America in the long run ?|||Read about the 2nd grade teacher that took her class on a field trip to a lesbian wedding the month before this vote.

People outside this state do not look at the school ties this issue had. It was not a simple yes or no on marriage alone. If it was marriage alone the school teacher unions would not have been fighting it with teacher union money. Teaching was the issue if they would have made it iron clad no teaching it would have not been a problem.

If you look up in the last two days this question has been asked over and over and every time it was asked it never included teaching in the question.

Clarify these issue and it would have been struck down:

    Marriage - fine

Teaching to kids? - different story

If it is not about teaching? - why the hell are teacher unions spending money to fight it

tax issues? Make it clear that tax exempt status

I currently live in maine and get maine care. what would be the equivalent in california? and is it hard to get?|||There is no equivalent.

In California, you can be an illegal immigrant or indigent and get MediCal, or you can be simply too poor to afford medical insurance and you get nothing.|||Medi-Cal is easy to obtain if you meet the income level. Depending in the county you'll be residing in, Medi-Cal may have a contract with an HMO Such as Kaiser Permanente. If such contract exists then you may "assign" your Medi-Cal to the Health Plan and have zero copays or a share of cost for covered services and prescriptions . The provider of care should not have access to how your medical coverage was obtained meaning at the point of service the receptionist/clerk/physician does not know you have Medi-Cal assigned to the Health Plan only the copay amount if there be any.

You will want to contact The Department of Health Services in the county you are considering moving to so you may inquire about the application process. You may find the local office address and phone number in the yellow pages under Local Government.

Hope this helps|||Medi-Cal. If you moved here you would have to meet the residence requirement. Until then you have to have the Maine insurance. Contact the Med-Cal info line for more info. Medi-Cal is the equlivant of medicade through out the rest of the U>S.|||Medical is available if you qualify. I've been looking into regulations regarding exotic pet ownership in California (genets and fennec foxes to be exact), and none of my searches have turned up anything. So I figured that before I bothered anyone official in my state, I would ask the public. Does anyone know where one could find out this information?|||Hi there...

The state of California states that no one legally possess a any exotic animal as a pet even if they are purchased from a USDA breeder or even with a permit.

Californians cannot even have a pet gerbils! California legislators stated that should the rodents escape or be released that they may begin breeding. The climate of Southern California is similar to the desert habitat of gerbils. Already there are breeding colonies of feral gerbils in California that could impact the environment and harm native species. This essentially is what they are saying that any exotic pets in the state if they accidentally escape will destroy native wildlife and habitat.

California is, if you are an exotic animal collector, probably the worst place to live if you want to have one of these animals as pets.

I realize a lot of it has to do with population density, but other densely populated places like New York and Chicago don't have the same levels of pollution. Anyone know why?

What are the major contributors to pollution in California?|||Actually, the air is cleaner than it was in the 70s due to catalytic converters being required on all cars, a special blend of gasoline which costs more, awareness of air pollution by the public and "spare the air" days push to use public transit, better public transit, higher standards for California by state agencies regulating pollution.

You cannot generalize about a state this size. It has higher CO虏 in valleys where the particulates get stagnant like Los Angeles because of its topography. You get some in the bay area if there is an on-shore air current instead of the normal off-shore which sweeps all the pollution away.

Pollution is less from industry than it is from CO虏 since we have lost so many industries since the 60s. Diesel engines do contribute to air pollution with the huge number of trucks on the main highways moving freight. We dont use trains much to carry freight, which I think we should.|||What's pretty sad about all of that is that the normal winds in this part of the world brings "clean" ocean air over California, while Chicago and NY deal with air that has passed over the Great Plains and industrial Midwest, respectively.

Don't worry, California. Jerry will succeed in driving the rest of the businesses out so that your air will be pristine. You won't have any work and your state will be bankrupt, but your lungs won't suffer.|||Those regulations don't matter, but they could never. You could up the enforcement but then you'd only make the matters worse. Somewhere guys in [pajamas are talking about pumping crap into under the ocean and how they can make lots of money off it.

You still haven't figured it out yet, have you?|||Geography of LA is a big factor. The city is surrounded by mountains all almost every side, with an ocean breeze keeping the air trapped in this bowl. The pollution has no where to go. NY and Chicago are in more flat terrain, so the pollution can dissipate.|||As others have mentioned geography plays a large role and the geography induced pollution issues of SoCal are also common to all of the bowl cities of the West

I just heard Hotel California by the Eagles on the radio and I'm curious to hear everyone's interpretation of what the message of the song is. Would anyone like to break it down for me?|||Some people say it's a reference to a drug rehab center. Some say it's related to the church of Anton LaVey. Don Henley himself was vague when asked the question years ago. Here's a list of commonly told ideas:

    (1) The Hotel California is a real hotel located in (pick one) Baja California on the coastal highway between Cabo San Lucas and La Paz or else near Santa Barbara. In other words, the song is a hard look at the modern hospitality industry, which is plagued by guests who "check out any time [they] like" but then "never leave."

    (2) The Hotel California is a mental hospital. I see one guy on the Web has identified it as "Camarillo State Hospital in Ventura County between LA and Santa Barbara."

    (3) It's about satanism. Isn't everything?

    (4) Hotel California is a metaphor for cocaine addiction. See "You can check out any time you like but you can never leave." This comes from the published comments of Glenn Frey, one of the coauthors.

    (5) It's about the pitfalls of living in southern California in the 1970s, my interpretation since first listen. Makes perfect sense, and goddammit, who you going to believe, some ignorant rock star or me?

    (6) My fave, posted to the Usenet by Thomas Dzubin of Vancouver, British Columbia: "There was this fireworks factory just three blocks from the Hotel California . . . and it blew up! Big tragedy. One of the workers was named Wurn Snell and he was from the town of Colitas in Greece. One of the workers who escaped the explosion talked to another guy . . . I think it was probably Don Henley . . . and Don asked what the guy saw. The worker said, "Wurn Snell of Colitas . . . rising up through the air."|||I think that this song simply refers to Hell, and a man's account of how he got there and what it was like.

Hi, I'd like to know how to become a resident of California. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and I want to attend a school in California, MI, and it says to qualify for loans, I have to be a resident of California. How would I become a resident? Do I have to live their for a year??? I hope I dont, and if I do, can I still qualify for the loans if I live there, but havn't been living there for a year? Please help, thanks.|||While there is a California Township in Michigan, my guess is that the "MI" is a misprint, or something, since there is no school there. I guess you are interested in the State of California. If you are under 18, your residence is that of your parents. If you are 18 or over, just living in CA as a student is NOT going to make you a resident for tuition purposes. At a minimum, unless you are married or 24 years old, you will have to prove financial independence from your parents. Check out this site, and be sure to follow the links for further information:

    http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/ad鈥?/a>

However, for other purposes you may be a resident (if 18 or over) if you demonstrate an intent to remain in CA permanently and not return to AZ.

BTW, claiming that you lived in California when you did not would be fraud and/or perjury. I don't recommend it.|||For school purposes you must live about a year in the State to be consider a cAlifornia resident. You might be able to qualify for loans and scholarships as a non-resident of the state, but I do not know if the school is going to charge more fees for not being a resident. So, the loan might not cover the full amount.
Another thing you can do to get the resident status is-if you are not independent- whomever is living with you and supporting you can claim the residency part. For instance, if you are living with your dad in Arizona, but move in with your mom in California, as long as she has been living in CA for at least a year and she supports you, she can request for you to be consider a resident of CA.
Hope it helps.|||Yes you have to live here for a year prior to your date of application to college. If you know someone here you can say you have been living here and use their address, as long as it does not clash with your being in Arizona during that time.

I have heard nightmares about the housing market and wondered if purchasing land is possible? What about buying a home near the beach? Should I even entertain the idea of living in Santa Barbara? What about little known affordable surrounding areas that are just as attractive?|||it seems that the california housing market MIGHT be cooling down. if you can wait some(6 months-1 year),it would be to your advantage. santa barbara will never be cheap or even reasonable, & there are parts(montecito for example) that are outrageous. the coast will always be more expensive than inland, but you may be able to do better down in carpinteria or ventura county or up in santa maria(thats a fair piece away!)|||The average house will be more than $1,000,000. That makes a mortgage about $6,000/month depending on your down payment. The housing market is a mess, but depending on how close you want to ive to the beach or downtown SB, you can afford it. Look on the MLS listings, find a realtor with a webpage, and most will have a "payment calculator".

california condor extinction affecting mankind|||First off they are not going extinct. They are increasing from a mear 21 that were captured from the wild and the USFWS started a captive breeding program. There are over 400 now in the world and close to 200 in the wild. There have been close to 25 of the birds born in the wild.

The birds have been headed for extinction for the last 10,000 years and would be gone if the government hadn't stepped in to halt the downward trend. It is an expensive program but the California Condor is the largest flying bird in North America at up to 25 pounds and wingspan of 9 1/2 feet. If the condor went extinct there would not be any significant impact on humans.

I have worked as a volunteer with the USFWS Condor Recovery Program for several years.

You keep assuming that the extinction of the Condor will have a significant impact. The condor is a scavenger and doesn't kill or affect other species, much less humans. There are other scavengers that can fill this nitch. One of which is increasing right now, the black vulture and the turkey vulture and the raven. The condor did very well durning the spanish period of California. They raised large herds of free roam beef from which they mostly only used the tallow (fat) and exported the hides, the meat was to abundant to be consumed and could not be exported so it rotted in the fields and provided a ready and abundant meal for the condors. Although the condor of today do find an occasional meal by themselves, they are being fed by the USFWS using, guess what, aborted fetuses from dairy cattle.|||It's quite possible that if the California Condors really do go extinct, mankind will never notice. In fact, Nature might not even notice. That's the thing, Nature is enough of a web that you can rip apart a piece of thread here-and-there, without really affecting the whole. The threads immediately around will notice, but beyond that, nobody cares.

It's only when you start making major changes, or many minor changes, that real problems begin.

Not that I want to see the bird go extinct. It's a magnificent creature, though absolutely butt-ugly, if you've ever been to the San Diego Wild Animal Park and seen them in person.|||It wont really have a major affect, think about it. We have all this Technology and all that good stuff now so a connection between one species of bird will not have a major impact. The problem with all of these reverse osmosis systems is that they require massive amounts of electricity. For instance, the facility in Tampa has its own dedicated coal-fired electrical generation plant immediately adjacent.|||ok so you have the plant, and it looks like someone gave u the link already... so, i will answer the other parts...
you need to have a plan because we are surely going to use up all of our fresh water with the way humans are reproducing. people think that rain is "free and new" water, but its just recycled water, and the more we let insecticides and bleaches etc leak into the fresh water, the more it gets unable for us to use. plus, we put tons of chlorine in the water to keep it safe for us to drink. so, we are making our fresh water "unusable" and we waste tons of water in long showers, brushing our teeth, washing our cars and dogs...etc etc. WE ARE LLLLOOOWW on FRESH water, and nobody knows this.
also... water that we get from places like the colorado river isn't always going to be there, it will soon dry up. have you heard of the salt beds in california? ive seen them... its dried up water... we desparatly need water. Also... the Los Angeles aquaducts have dried up entire lake beds supporting our fresh water needs!! you can use that in your report... im sure you can google that.

it costs a lot to desalinate water. desalination takes a lot of energy, the energy put into taking the salt out, makes us lose profit because water is too cheap- so we would have to hike up the price.( like gas!!) and.. one more thing... we would have sooo much salt left over after doing so, that we would have nowhere to store it... and we already have enough salt to go around the world... we wouldn't need it for eating... there are alot of problems with this. we need to be careful on how much water we use.

Is it as desirable as say southern california?|||It depends on what, exactly, you desire. Southern California is warmer/hotter. NorCal is a major center for technology, banking, and biotech, while SoCal is a major center for the film industry and fashion. Many people in SoCal superficially judge based on physical appearance; many people in NorCal superficially judge based on green living. SoCal has way more people, so there is more traffic. NorCal has slightly better public transportation, including BART and CalTrain. NorCal has redwood forests, SoCal has dessert.|||I wish I knew your age. People move to Nor Cal for basically two reasons. 1. They get a job here 2. They want to live in San Francisco (a funky city). Most people you live in Nor Cal, which includes the bay area and the Central Valley, like living here but out-of-staters don't really have a dream to move here. In recent years a new type of O2 sensor has appeared. The ones we are used to are now known as narrowband sensors - they are biased to 0.45 volts by the computer and drop to about 0.1 volt when the mixture is lean and rise to about 0.9 when the mixture is rich. The computer chases the mixture back and forth across the crossover point several times a second (7 is good, 4 is not) to keep the average mixture right. The new sensors, called wideband sensors, produce a more linear output. It is possible the California version uses the wideband sensor. I got a speeding ticket in Portland, OR and I have a California driver's license. Oregon does not seem to have a traffic school option ( I called the court and they told me this). When they send this record to CA DMV, does CA DMV give me an option to attend traffic school?

I just don't want this ticket on my clean record.|||Through applicable interstate agreements, OR will report the violation to CA. Unfortunately, traffic school is an option given to people who get tickets in California to avoid a conviction. Even in California it does not eliminate a conviction once that it entered. It will be one point on your record, which may or may not affect your insurance rates.

You might want to double check on the availability of traffic school in OR, perhaps with an OR attorney. I am no expert on OR law, but my brief research shows traffic schools advertising for Multnomah County, where Portland is located, so it does appear to be an option there (including online schools you could complete from California).

http://www.carinsurance.com/kb/content42鈥?/a>|||If the traffic school option is available in the jurisdiction where the alleged violation occurred then you may choose that to address the traffic ticket by going to traffic school. You should contact the court in OR and ask them again if traffic school is an option. Most states do allow traffic school for most infraction. However, for example in California, if you exceed the speed limit by more than 25 mph then you may not be allowed to attend traffic school.

So, contact the court in OR again to make sure that traffic school is not an option for you. Also, most states share driving records so it is likely that you may see the ticket on your California DVM record.|||your misdemeanor traffic offense took place in Oregon and that is where you have to pay the penalty, in this case a traffic fine.

Why would Oregon send your traffic ticket to California? You pay the fine in Oregon and they file the ticket away. The only reason for them to contact California is if you do not pay the fine.|||this is an out of state event that you got caught at. you have to pay the fine and pay for the points thru higher insurance rates til it passes and learn not to be speeding. guess what your record is no longer clean. washing with soap won't work either. you got caught so learn to deal with it like the rest of us. just cause you left the state does not give you the right to speed. learn to drive proper and repect the law!!

I'm writing a project for school and this is one of the questions I need to answer. In other words, what things in california helped the eucalyptus tree adapt so well that it became invasive? Hope that made sense.. Thank you!|||Unprotected tree sex.. or the Mexican's snuck it in with them. Either one would explain why there are so many.|||it prospers in moderated humid climate..it likes light soil -sandy soil..and since it is originated from Australia, transplanted,it has no biological enemies,yet..an amazing advantage of this amazing long aged tree,it has a very successful and effective self defense strategy.it has fragile and easy breakable branches,so it doesn't resist to storms and hurricanes ..it just easily surrender and gives up their branches and keeps the trunk that gets to re- flourish over and over....good luck|||eucalyptus tree actually robs lot of water and destroys neighboring other plants, so they should be avoided especially in dry or desert like areas.|||From Australian miners Californians would learn of the huge tree that grew easily in temperate climates with little regard to soil or water. It seemed the perfect crop for construction timber and fuel in the rapidly growing state. The tree that one day would be called "America's largest weed" was the "wonder tree" of 19th century California.

The first successful planting of eucalyptus in California probably occurred in San Francisco. W.C. Walker of the Golden Gate Nursery planted seeds from several species in 1853.

By the 1870s, a eucalyptus boom was in full swing throughout the state. The Australian native was planted on thousands of acres.

"For a person who has some capital and is willing to wait for returns, there is a pretty chance to make a fortune in the growing of gum trees," one California newspaper suggested.

The eucalyptus seemed to offer several paths to fortune. Shipbuilders, who first saw the wood as it was used in Australian ships, were eager to try the timber. Regrettably, they discovered that California blue gum eucalyptus split and curled, unlike the old-growth trees used by Australian shipbuilders.

San Diego joined the eucalyptus boom in the 1880s, mostly as a fuel crop.

"Ranchers in the Poway valley have begun to plant eucalyptus trees on the bare spots on the hillside, not only as a source for fuel but to improve the looks of the region," the San Diego Union reported in February 1881.

In May, the newspaper reported, "The eucalyptus groves planted in the Cajon valley ... are doing very well; the trees grow rapidly in this climate and show great promise as shade trees and sources of wood."

In the mid-1880s, as the railroad crept south from Los Angeles, developers Frank and Warren Kimball planted thousands of blue gums near the Sweetwater River.

If eucalyptuses disappointed as a source for shipbuilders or fuel, experts were happy to suggest additional uses. As extensive tree-planting along San Diego city sidewalks began in the late 1880s, eucalyptus promoters cautioned that "shade and moisture (would) cause malaria." However, they said, "it is well known ... that the blue gum tree (eucalyptus globulus) instead of creating malaria actually destroys it."

The medicinal value of eucalyptus became a popular theme. As early as 1872, the California Pharmaceutical Society predicted products from the tree would "ultimately supersede expensive drugs now in use." Eucalyptus oil extracted from the leaves was touted as an antiseptic and anti-spasmodic and could be used as an expectorant, stimulant and deodorant. It could treat not only malaria but also insomnia, fevers, bladder infections, dysentery, diphtheria, tuberculosis and venereal disease.

But in San Diego, the greatest claim to fame for the eucalyptus was its large-scale production for railroad ties.

In August 1906, the Santa Fe Land Improvement Co., a subsidiary of the Santa Fe Railway, bought the 9,000-acre San Dieguito Ranch in north San Diego County.

"The question of lumber for ties is one that is being given a great deal of attention," a company spokesman said. "Experiments have shown that the eucalyptus tree makes first-class ties. ... The work of planting these trees will be commenced without delay."

The company took delivery of 6 million eucalyptus seeds shipped from Australia. In a three-room adobe at the former homestead of Don Juan Maria Osuna, San Diego's first mayor, a team successfully propagated 3 million seedlings. The young trees were set out among the hillsides of the old rancho, now named Rancho Santa Fe.

The eucalyptus railroad tie experiment ended in failure. The soft wood split from the rail spikes and tended to throw the tracks. Santa Fe recouped its investment by subdividing the ranch into hundreds of parcels for country estates. The region soon attracted Hollywood celebrities such as Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford. Bing Crosby would live for a time at the old Osuna rancho, which he bought in 1932.

In recent years, California's historic enthusiasm for the eucalyptus has cooled. A worldwide study of the tree sponsored by the United Nations in 1955 concluded that in California, eucalyptuses had become useful only as windbreaks in citrus groves. Ecologists have been less kind, calling the tree an invasive pest that kills native vegetation and threatens biodiversity.

A private country club in the S.F. Bay area pays $14.00 per hr. but no tipping is allowed. I have read that California and Oregon are tossing this idea around for more tax revenue. Did they ever think people would just grow their own? Its not like pot is hard to grow or something. I personally could care less if pot is legalized or not.|||Allowing pot to be grown and taxed would be the smallest portion of money those states would generate. Law enforcement could actually solve crimes and the prisons would house real criminals, if they stopped wasting time, money and energy to go after pot growers and users. My question is: Why does law enforcement and Legislators believe that Prohibition of drugs would work any better than Prohibition on alcohol did in the 20s and 30's?|||for one, if you want good weed, it is not easy to grow.
second, nobodys gonna sit around and wait 6 or 7 months for the pot leaves to start budding, they'd much rather drive 2 minutes to the local gas station, buy a dub and smoke it on the spot.
thirdd, a lot of the prisoners that got in prison for selling pot in the first place would be released which mean less money coming out of the governments pocket to clothe/feed/bathe them.
and last but not least, the entire population would much rather buy it in stores, because once the government starts growing it in mass amounts, a large amount of really strong good weed would be sold for pretty cheap.|||Are you talking about legalizing the production of it as well? Because "legalize" doesn't mean "without restriction." This is something stoners always forget. I doubt very much that growing it in your backyard would be legal. If you wanted pot, you'd have to buy it from a dispensary, at highly inflated prices. THAT'S how it would help the economy.|||My thought has always been that they should legalize considering a large amount of the American population smoke it for some reason or another. I think in doing so, and taxing it would bring alot of revenue. It would have to be regulated though. People would not be able to just grow their own.|||People who could afford it would probably buy it rather then grow their own. Its easier and cheaper to grow your own vegetables, but most people don't. Its also the number one cash crop in both states, taxing it would create revenues in the billions.|||they want to legalize or decriminalize?
mine as well just legalize it|||Puff,Puff then pass don`t hog all that smoke...PeAcE

  • The IRS ceases collection attempts while an offer in compromise is in review. Does the California Franchise Tax Board do the same? Can I stop making payments while the OIC is being reviewed?|||Hello Hiro,
What you need to understand is that the offer in compromise application does not guarantee that it must be approved. You should continue to make payments until the collector from your county make first contact and advisies you that you can stop payment. Learn more about the process from the California Property tax blog at :http://www.californiapropertytax.info/ca鈥?/a>|||Offers/Compromise only has to deal with the IRS. If the CA FTB is after you, they will stay after you for a long, long time. You may not cease payments to any collections from the FTB, while handling a settlement issue with the IRS, unless you somehow got yourself some sort of stay from the FTB, which isn't too likely.

Furthermore, with the FTB, i believe, even if you declare bankruptcy, for your corporation, the FTB still holds the agent of records personally liable for any debts with the FTB.

How is driving in Santa Ana, Anaheim Costa mas and Los Angeles counties in California.
Are there any special rules and regulation one needs to know? What are the dos and dons?|||You want to rent a car. Are you old enough and do you meet the requirements for renting a car? Can you afford the daily rental rate, the insurance and the parking fees that you will have to pay? A hotel will charge at least $15 to park overnight, most places charge as much or more for daily parking, plus gas to drive from one to the other.

The bus/metro/subway system is awesome and costs only a few dollars per day. You will arrive at your destination much quicker than you will if you drive. For example, we recently went by public transportation from Universal Studios to Disneyland. Friends left at the same time and drove. We arrived before they did and it cost us $3 which is far less than it cost them.

If you think that you need to drive, be prepared for very busy highways filled to overflowing. Expect rush hour to be from 6 am to 10 pm. Even at night there is a lot of traffic. Study your map the night before so that you will know where to turn to get to where you are going. You will need to be ready to change lanes quickly to get to off-ramps and you will not have time to watch the traffic and signs so you need to be prepared.|||I would definitely use a GPS. The interchanges can be confusing. If you don't feel comfortable with the speed of the traffic, it's advisable to stay in the lane that is next to the far left lane. This way, the traffic is slower and you don't have to worry as much about traffic merging from the onramps. Good luck and have fun!

I'm aware there is an animal law in California or at least in the Los Angeles County area. It says that you can't have over a specific number of animals (I'm not sure if one type or all in general). But anyways my question is, what is the number of animals that one can have in their home?

-My sisters and I were having a debate whether it was 6 or 7.|||Different areas of the state have different limits. LA County ordinances limit number of pets as follows:

No more than 3 dogs per household, which must be licensed, microchipped, and altered (spayed or neutered).
No more than 5 cats per household, which must be licensed, altered (spayed or neutered), and must be kept primarily indoors.

LA County has mandatory spay/neuter laws due to the massive overcrowding in their shelters and high euthanasia rates. You may not possess an intact dog over 6 months old without a special (and expensive) breeding license. To exceed the per-household limits, you must apply for and be granted an animal facility license.

Going to California for a tour in Dec. 27-Jan. 2, can you please advise the best places to check out and where to book for more affordable rates? Is it better to book online? We are planning to visit Disneyland, how many days should be allocate for that trip?|||There are literally hundreds of things to do here in LA. Here is my list of “must sees”. Visit as many as you have time for.:

Disneyland: The Happiest Place on Earth. Half a billion visitors can’t be wrong. #1 Destination. That time is one of the most crowded times of the year, especially Dec 31. (We should know, we go there each year for NYE). Figure 3 days. It is actually cheaper to book online through a travel site or even Disneyland.com, booking "a la carte". Packages actually cost more, and the perks (little tokens) aren't really worth it. Stick with tripadvisor.com or travelocity.com.
Universal Studios: A theme park that grew out of a studio tour. #2 Destination.
Even if you don’t visit Disneyland or Universal Studios Tour, Downtown Disney District and Universal City Walk are very fun places to visit for shopping and eating. And they’re free to visit.

Hollywood: Enjoy the Walk of Fame, Entertainment Museum, Chinese Theatre and more. You can see a lot for free. The Hollywood & Highland complex has lots of shops and restaurants, and the Kodak Theater. The El Capitan theater, right across the street, is where Disney shows their movies. And the Hollywood Bowl is a GREAT place to listen to concerts outdoors.

Olvera Street/Union Station: Olvera Street is the birthplace of LA, and it emphasizes our Mexican heritage. In addition to the Avila Adobe (oldest building in LA), you can eat at some pretty good Mexican Restaurants, do a little shopping, and taste a churro. If you don’t want to go to Tijuana, this is as close as it gets without going there. Union Station has great architecture from a bygone age. Also, you are 2 blocks from Phillippe’s (see below).

Rodeo Drive, 90210: Packed with exclusive shops, full of gawkers. They all came to enjoy the excess. Free, unless you intend to buy something.

Venice Beach: Los Angeles kitsch and over-the-top culture at its best. Here you'll find Muscle Beach, street performers and tacky shops galore. Fun, VERY interesting, but I avoid it after dark, when it gets a little TOO interesting for my taste.

Santa Monica: Beach and Pier: Great beach scene and a classic seaside amusement park, complete with antique carousel that has been in a lot of TV and movies. After visiting the pier, you can ride a bike south a couple miles to Venice Beach.

Sunset Boulevard began as a route between the stars' posh neighborhoods and the Hollywood studios. It runs from downtown to the ocean, passing through the "Sunset Strip" on its way.

Farmers Market and The Grove - A new shopping complex right next to a Los Angeles landmark, It is right next to CBS, so walk across the lot to see if they are taping "The Price is Right". You might even get in.

Griffith Park - Home of the Los Angeles Zoo, Griffith Park Observatory, Travel Town, the Greek Theatre, and Gene Autry Museum of Western Heritage.

Attend a TV taping - You can get free tickets at audiencesunlimited.com, tvtix.com, or see the booth at Universal City walk. It's very interesting to see a show being taped. The most popular, by far, is the Tonight show. Check the NBC web site for all the details there.

    Places to eat:
In-N-Out Burger: Multiple locations, best burger in LA, ask anyone.
Pink’s Hot Dogs: 709 N. La Brea, just north of Melrose. You might even see a celebrity. Maybe.
Tommy’s Chili Burgers: Look for the shack, an LA tradition. The original location is at Beverly & Rampart, a couple miles west of downtown.
Canter’s Deli: 419 N. Fairfax, between Beverly & Melrose. Near CBS, you might spot a celebrity.
Phillippe’s: 1001 N. Alameda. Great roast beef sandwiches. Near Union Station and Olvera Street. Watch the mustard, it’s hot.
Tito’s Taco’s: Voted best tacos in LA, even though it’s in Culver City.
The Pantry: Corner of Figueroa and 9th, downtown. Huge portions, they never close, GREAT steak and eggs.

    Places to Stay:
Since LA is so spread out, there is no single place that is close to EVERYTHING. Most people who come here tend to stay in Hollywood, Santa Monica, or Anaheim. In Hollywood, I recommend the Orchid Suites, Hollywood Celebrity Hotel, or Holiday Inn Walk of Fame, all near Hollywood and Highland. Another one is the Best Western Sunset Plaza. In Santa Monica, the Holiday Inn Santa Monica is close to the pier and reasonably priced. In Anaheim, I recommend the Howard Johnson (HoJo) Anaheim, and the Candy Cane Inn. There is also a nice place in Burbank called the Best Western Media Center, very close to Warner, NBC, and Universal Studios.

    Places to Shop:
    Third Street Promenade, Santa Monica
    The Grove, Los Angeles
    Americana @ Brand, Glendale
    Beverly Center, Los Angeles
    Citadel Outlets, Commerce
    Brea Mall, Brea
    The Block at Orange, Orange
    South Coast Plaza, Costa Mesa
    Fashion Island, Newport Beach
    Santee Alley, Los Angeles

Check out citypass.com for great deals on Disney, Universal, and Sea World.|||They have a few hotels in Anaheim that actually have shuttles to and from Disneyland so you don't have to worry about parking. You should try the Sheraton Anaheim Resort or Sheraton Garden-Grove Hotel. They both offer shuttle and are nice hotels. I'd say for Disneyland, if you've never been? Try 3-4 days so you can hit up California Adventure too. And since you're in the area try out Medieval Times and Pirate's Dinner Adventure! Both are great and gives you a show AND delicious dinner. Hope I helped.|||Rates are unlikely to be "affordable" near Disneyland over Christmas - that's the most expensive/popular time of year. The question would be whether you can find any vacancies at this late date. You can use the "usual" on-line travel sites [Expedia, Travelocity, etc] or see your travel agent.|||If you have family/friends in the LA/Orange County area then I HIGHLY suggest that you go crash in with them because the rates of a hotel during that time is NOT going to be cheap.

I hear a lot of jargon about constitutional law, wherein neither the people nor the Legislature do not have the right to revise or adjust the California State Constitution, which is what Prop 8 does. And the very proposition violates the constitution itself. There is an equal protection clause that causes prop 8 to be in direct contradiction with the constitution. Yes, the courts and legislature do have the power to overturn it because it's not an amendment, it's a revision. And the "will of the people" cannot violate the rights of the minority.

What is the truth?|||Fundamentally Jack is correct - there is no discrimination. Every man has the right to marry any willing woman and vice versa. No man has the right to marry another man. Problem is that homosexuals want the term "marriage" to be changes. It's not a civil rights issue, it's a perception issue, and most people do not want the perception of marriage to be changed to include men-men and women-women.

Frankly I could care less. Morally I could care less. But LEGALLY, there is no discrimination, no violation of rights, and frankly, had Proposition 22 be upheld it probably would have been overturned because it was simply a law. Now that 8 passed, it will be extremely difficult indeed to change the constitution.|||I think that gays and lesbians should be able to marry. |||In California, it is possible for the people to put an amendment in the state constitution by a majority vote. This shouldn't even be an issue.|||I shall wait and see what the courts say on this as they know the law and I do not. While the issue of equal protection is a more than valid point, the same can be said in regards to the establishment clause as well.

Heres a good question. Is marriage a legal matter of the state or a private matter of church? If it is the former, than two consenting adults of legal age should be able to consecrate their relationship in the eyes of the state and receive with it all of the protections, benefits and liabilities that come with being legally married.
However, if marriage is the former, a private and religious matter that is merely officiated by state recognition, than the mandate of the state that marriages which go against religious principle could be viewed as a challenge to the Church's religious freedom, as they are potentially being told by law to accept and tolerate a personal social matter that is against their protected religious teachings.

In actuality, the matter is one of conservative thought versus progressive thought in its purest and most literal form. While those who adhere to the old ways of things and who cherish and protect tradition are wary and even defensive against change and social progress, those who seek it grow deeply bitter at their rivals inability to see things their way. Though right in a civil and social sense, their righteousness is lost when personal morality comes into conflict in others.

Its a funny issue and one that will only be resolved through endless court cases and ACLU actions, but in the end it will be overturned.|||All this talk about the "majority" and the "minority"

this "majority" was 52%. I hardly call that a majority, and probably one of the reasons it is being looked at. And it is literally a PROPOSITION, not an automatic law that is to be put into effect.

It will be overturned because california does not want to deal with lawsuits against the states because the constitution is stripping them of their civil rights. which it is. Prop 8 is a direct violation of civil rights. People do not realize the benefits of marriage. There are over 100 technical and legal differences between a civil union and a marriage. a major one is the fact that a married couple can file their taxes together, which saves them money and in turn benefits the economy. There is nothing in the constitution that states anything about marriage. The only reason people want it to be illegal because people fear the unknown.

I know that many people argue that gay marriage is wrong "because it says so in the bible." well, you cannot base a law off of something in the bible because of separation of church and state.

"But...but....but.. what about the children???" yes i know. this is a typical cliche scare tactic. Instead of teaching kids being gay is wrong and disgusting, we should teach them to embrace it so we can raise a tolerant, peaceful generation. now instead of giving me a thumbs down or trying to report me, actually think about your child, sister, friend, brother, and if they wanted to get married to someone they love and because of people's ignorance, they could not. put yourself in their position.|||The rights of the minority? Yeah i know this country is a democratic republic and America leans more on the republic side but doesn't the majority have a say?
The people have spoken and that is that.

this "minority" if you can give them that title, should respect the vote because the vote is sacred. Would they like it if their opponents would challenge their vote?

i think not!|||Gay rights are unconstitutional and should never have been called a right in the first place, they are just a minority trying to impose their will over the legal rights of Americans.|||The truth is simple: Prop 8 will not be overturned. The state constitution may be revised or clarified as needed by the changing times. That's why there are so many amendments to the federal constitution.

Prop 8 clarified an unspecific section regarding the state's position on marriage by stating a marriage legally recognized by the state is a traditional wedding bond between two individuals of the opposite sex, no more and no less. Now everyone has equal protection under the law, because every individual has the same rights, including homosexuals.

The problem is that homosexuals don't want the same rights, they want extra rights for their group that are specific to their lifestyle choice, something that the people of the state have clearly demonstrated their opposition to in no uncertain terms.

Face facts, the majority of the people feel that homosexual activity is vulgar, inappropriate, and not deserving of the recognition or protection of the state constitution. Normal people don't want homosexuals in our community, teaching our children that homosexuality is perfectly acceptable, or dictating laws to the rest of the state. We have made it clear that we don't mind if you want to keep your lifestyle behind closed doors, but stop trying to the rest of us to accept you with open arms as if you are completely normal, because clearly you are not.

That's the truth.|||Sorry but the 'Will of the People' IS what can revise a State's Constitution.
Look at the facts. The only States that do have Gay Marriage were by Judicial fiat. No voting, no referendums. Liberal Judges found a loophole and Declared that Gay Marriage was legal.
This country is run By the People and For the People.
Look how many States put a referendum on Gay Marriage in the 2004 elections. All voted down Gay Marriage.
Now, if Gays were smart they would ask for Civil Unions. It gives them all the same rights as a conventional couple but doesn't include the word 'Marriage'. You don't hear any complaints about Vermont, do you?
Gays aren't too bright. If they accepted Civil Unions then Gay Marriage would probably come around in 15-20 years. The problem is that they have no patience. Now State Constitutions have a Law that Gays can never Marry. It will be 40 years before Gay Marriages are recognized in those States. Even the Dem Messiah is against Gay Marriage.
    Whine somewhere else.

I am in the process of purchasing two small businesses in California, the expected combined net revenue should be around $200,000. What would I pay in taxes?|||That depends upon the type of corporation. An S-Corp's income flows directly to your Form 1040 tax return and is taxed as ordinary income. A C-Corp pays its own taxes, and each C-Corp stands on its own as a separate legal entity and is taxed based upon its own income alone.

Without a LOT more details it's not possible to give any kind of meaningful estimate. I live in Wisconsin and taxes are being passed daily. And unemployment is going through the roof because business are moving out to more tax friendly areas. Is that happening in California?|||Yes!

Politicians are worse than regular people when it comes to money. They give a bunch of it away in order to get elected, then blame someone else for the deficit. And they don't care because it's not their money.

The sad thing, more of the rich are leaving California, leaving it up to regular people to pay taxes, and they don't make enough.|||California is broke! they are victims of overspending, liberalism, and the unrealistic environmentalist. You know that it occasionally loses paarts in to the ocean .. maybe God is telling us something|||All those things are happening in California.

California is about to run out of money and many government services will have to be suspended. The governor has said no more taxes (the state eaised taxes considerably just a few months ago) and no new borrowings (additional borrowings, if available, will only defer the day of reckoning). Governor Schwartzenegger said the only way out is to cut spending.

My friend is an illegal immigrant who is currently living in California. She has been here for about 3 years on some sort of visa and it expired. She has no documents but gave birth to her daughter in California about 2 years ago. She will be going to court for some personal issues that's not related to her immigration status. If the courts find out that she's illegal, would she be in trouble?|||Why havent you reported your friend??! Do you care about your freedoms?|||If she "has no documents," then it appears that she did not come legally. It is entirely possible that her status would come up in court, depending on what the case is about.

Her child has a right to citizenship in her country of citizenship. It is imperative that she obtain a passport for her child from her country of citizenship. If anything happens, in the court matter or otherwise, that she could be deported, she will need the child's passport from her country to take the child back with her without a visa or any immigration hassles. If she leaves the child behind, abandonment is grounds for termination of parental rights. She would never see her child again.

Since she is in the US illegally, she really needs to take her child back to her own country with her. Regardless of the outcome of her court matter.|||I believe that they do not ask things other then what is actually relevant to the case as long as it has nothing to do with the case they will probably not ask. She should talk to someone to find out how she can go about becoming a citizen or maybe obtaining a new visa.|||Most people who are here illegally came in legally but their visa expired. She should take care of this right away.

I doubt anyone will ask her about her immigration status, but not knowing what her case is about, no one can tell you for sure.|||California is a Sanctuary state.

The car's title needs to be transfered to someone in california where the car currently is. I recall seeing a online program that does all the paperwork for you and basically eases the proces to do it online. Does anyone know any of these that would help to do this online?|||You cannot do it online and you cannot do it period if you don't have a title for the car. Heck, the car might not belong to the seller, the car might have a lien on it or it could be stolen? The seller MUST furnish the buyer with a valid title at the time of the sale. They Buyer should never give anyone a plug nickel without first having that title in their hands........................basically|||Cannot be done online. If a Title is lost, you have to apply to the State the Title is from and get that before you can Title it in another State. A Replacement Title must be applied for by the person on the Title and if it had a Lien printed on it, even though that Lien is satisfied or paid off, the application for the Replacement Title has a section that the former Lien Holder must fill out and have notarized also, even though the Lien is paid. Then once the Duplicate Title is received you can go change it over. California you must take it into the DMV, as they will go out to your car and physically check the VIN Number to verify it. This cannot be done online.

We are planning a 2 to 3 week holiday to California (2 adults, 3 kids) and want to visit San Francisco, Yosemite, San Diego, LA and the Grand Canyon. We are happy to drive, but would also like to use trains (but NOT coach tours) and maybe planes. Any ideas, suggestions appreciated.|||For the Grand Canyon and Yosemite you will probably have to drive. For Yosemite, you can take a train to Merced but would have to take a bus into the park. For the Grand Canyon I don't believe there is any rail service nearby so rental car or bus tour would be the only option there. For the SF Bay Area a car really isn't necessary, especially for travel and sight seeing within the city of SF; it's a very dense city and has lots of public transit. Other parts of the Bay Area are accessible by BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) or ferry for areas along the bay. To get to Southern CA you can either drive or fly. Driving down I-5 would be fastest but also the most mind numbingly boring option since it's all flat farmland for most of the drive. Highway 101 down the coast is more scenic but slower. Highway 1 is the most scenic since it runs along the water's edge but is also the slowest by far. Amtrak's Coast Starlight train would get you from the Bay Area to LA by train from the Bay Area and is a very nice, scenic train ride. It takes about 14-16 hours though to travel that route but it's nicer than driving and you'll see more than flying. You can also stop along the route and spend a night in places like Monterey or Santa Barbara. But since there is only one daily train in each direction you will have to spend the night if you decide to get off the train and sight see then take the train the next day. You can also take Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner for travel between Downtown LA and San Diego, it's about as fast as driving and even fast when there is heavy traffic. It's the 2nd busiest rail route in the nation and there are numerous trains all day running between the two cities so it's convenient. But if you want to do sight seeing for places in between LA and SD like Disneyland, Orange County, ect.. a rental car might be the better option. And Disneyland is only about 90 minutes from SD. Although Amtrak does have a stop near Disneyland too if you would rather stick with the train.

For travel between SF to LA to SD I would look at Amtrak's website and see if those trains work for you. Yosemite and the Grand Canyon would have to be done by car. Although you might want to fly to Phoenix or Las Vegas then drive to the Grand Canyon b/c it might be a really long drive from Southern CA.|||You might want to fly to each of your main areas and then rent cars to explore the area. It would be difficult to tour California without a car. I would also suggest an Amtrak train ride from San Francisco to Reno/Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is a large, clear lake with a beautiful setting in the Sierra Nevadas.

It's a 3-4 hour car ride from San Francisco to Yosemite, but it is absolutely gorgeous. The huge granite mountains with waterfalls are truly awesome.
