The state of California is facing some 14 to 16 billion dollar deficit in its budget. And this will pressure the california educational system, namely, the public universities and the cost of tuition. What can the individuals do (including those who are not a student) to prevent this rise of the costs of education in the upcoming decades?|||Form your own political action committee by using the internet. Learn from Obama's campaign. ORGANIZE and nag the hell out of Schwarzenegger and your representatives in the state senate and assembly. BTW, the deficit is projected at 24 billion by 2010. Schwarzenegger doesn't want to raise taxes on the rich in California that's why he'd rather cut funding for education. The rich in California have proportionately lower taxes than the middle class in California. Arnold is part of the rich class as are his rich celebrity friends. It's time they start paying for all the benefits they are getting by being in California and the U.S. They'd never be this wealthy in any other country with what they do. The middle class in California pays far more taxes in proportion to their individual weath than the rich. Now Arnie wants to increase sales taxes which hurt the middle class and the poor even more. We need a luxury tax in California like they have in Missouri. Tax the Yacht owners, the airplane owners and the multi-house owners in the state in the effect that these things are luxuries. This will increase the opportunities for the middle class and poor in the state while simultaneously producing good working graduates who will in turn keep California prosperous for all.
Calfornia also spends more on building prisons than on education. This has to stop. It's getting way too ridiculous to spend more on a prisoner than we spend on a student in this state. My god, it really sends aloud message as to what our priorities are and it is a very disturbing message.
M.... raising tuition rates on Community Colleges are not the answer. They are already hurting alot. And, the students are struggling to make ends meet as well. My students can barely afford materials. The reason they are at the CC's in the first place is because they can't affort the State schools or Universities. Most of them work full time already and are trying to get an education.
pibzz.... You have no idea what you're talking about. The reality is Higher education support per student is at a 25-year low: an increasing share of the cost for higher education has shifted to parents, as state and local spending for public colleges and universities has dropped. Arnie cut the budget for education at least twice since he has been in office despite the fact that tuition is rising. I suggest your try to research before you write such nonsense. There has also been a hiring freeze for full time faculty at the community college level which severly impairs the quality of education. Education is our greatest asset in a democracy. It should be accessible to all.
Sasha, Schwarzenegger hasn't raised ANY taxes since he's been governor. You absolutely have no idea of what you are talking about. Geesuz Christ. Maybe the city raised their property taxes but that has nothing to do with the State. Arnie hasn't raised any taxes. I dare you to look it up and prove it to me.|||It sounds really harsh. But there are many people in the educational system that are illegal. They need to be stopped because our educational system alone is near failing. I have known many of illegal families that can send their kids to school. Well they need to pay for it.
Also, I think a cost of tuition could raise a bit. At CSUN it costs about 1-2k for a full load. Compared to UC's and private schools that's spare change. CC's are $20 a unit. It is ridiculously cheap. Maybe a raise to $25-30. It is still a great price.
Plus, we don't need to spend more. So, I don't understand how people can vote for the propositions that required spending.|||Outlaw the public employee union - these thugs have bankrupted not only the State, but our children's future.
We spend more on education than any other state, and we are near the bottom in quality.
California Teacher salary is highest in the nation
You can spend all the money in the world on K-12 education, but until we put more money in the classrooms and less in bureaucracy and act responsibly with what we have, the extra money will be for naught.
|||So? Then the students will have to get a few jobs. Sure are lazy people these days. We did it and lived. Then you can do it and live. There is nothing you can do about the cost. Our greedy law makers have been scamming tuition's for years. He has no choice. Also, was not the Girly Man that caused this. Was DemocRATS once again. If one wants to go to college, then one must work for it.|||Good question. Reduce the salaries of the administrators. A good cost analysis would help find other "pork" or wasted money. It will take a demand from the California citizens to achieve that.|||Billions of drain comes from illegal aliens
Write to senators to demand law enforcement, deportations, a wall and e-verify so they are not tempted to come back ever|||The easiest way to avoid California's deficit would be to move to another state. |||I'll suggest stop wasting time and $73 million on banning gay people from getting married. |||Stop educating illegal aliens
