This 10 yr old boy started an 800 sq. mile fire in California with matches. Should charges be brought against him or his parents? Should he be taken out of his home and placed in a juvenille facility? The D.A. has not brought charges against them yet, but they're contemplating it.|||I don't believe the boy meant to start those fires. It was an accident. If anything give him community service, don't ruin his life. The parents had nothing to do with it so I'm not sure why they should be charged.

The real question is should people be allowed to build houses in areas where it is known to be fire prone? Mother nature designed those forests to burn every few years|||In my opinion, when I was 10 I understood that throwing matches into garbage cans, and playing with fire in general, could not only start a dangerous fire but could also lead to personal injury.

So maybe his parents never told him not to play with matches, or maybe California's school system is so underfunded and inadequate that they don't teach fire safety or common sense to school children. Or maybe the kid is just clinically retarded.

I think a lot more investigation has to go into this. Such as where he started the fire? Where were his parents? Why was he playing with matches/lighters?

Maybe they'll discover he has a mental problem (such as obsession with fire) or maybe he was trying to hurt himself or others. Or maybe he was just a stupid kid who thought it would be funny.

Either way, ask any 10 year old if it's a good idea to play with fire and they'll tell you know. He's not too young to be punished. And he DEFINITELY should be punished in some way (if anything to set an example for other kids).

I say the parents should be charged. Give them a big fine. Clearly he is still a minor under their care and obviously not yet mature or responsible enough to be out unsupervised. Send the kid to a juvenile facility for a few months + councelling + community service such as planting trees for 1000 hours to replant some of the trees that were lost.
