I am a former California resident who still owns property in CA. My major source of income now comes from China where I already get heavily taxed. Do I still need to pay CA income tax as a non-resident? How do I qualify to be a non-resident of CA?|||This is from CA web site:
A resident is any individual who is:
鈥?In California for other than a temporary or transitory purpose; or
鈥?Domiciled in California, but outside California for a temporary or transitory purpose.

A nonresident is any individual who is not a resident.
So if you have left CA and live in China, then you may be non-resident of CA.

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident, then you must report your world wide income on the federal return. You will get credit for taxes paid in China or may even be able to get foreign earned income exclusion of up to $85,000.|||You will pay tax on your California source income no matter where you live. You become a non-resident by moving out of state.
